What keeps us working hard? In the beginning it was to out run a lion or tiger or bear. (Oh my). There is a benefit in the modern day to work hard to secure the better job to have access to the better goods and services such as cars, groceries, and childcare…no one wants the 15 year old with gun tattoos taking care of their 6 year old. So there is a certain threshold to meet where one works hard enough to obtain these wants, but not surpass it so much where these wants marginally add value to one’s life. Of course, this could be seen as the law of diminishing returns, but no one seems to follow it these days.
It is common to work hard because one has the time and has not put enough thought into what to do with their lives when an employer is not playing puppet master. The modern person spends their life moderately miserable to reach these wants, but also to have this thing called status. What is the benefit of having a giant sippy cup, except for the fact that it was the top contractors from one of the top banks that were the first to have them?
Sure, in dire situations, having status could help. You could be carried out of the fire first or be given the first safe medical treatment to save your life while others wait for their turn. Yet, why is this method of signaling so important to justify and showcase one’s importance in this world. People’s value should be inherent and if nurtured could be maximized for the benefit of their community or humanity. It’s just in chasing these wants that often people forget what they are losing in return. Their happiness, their health, their relationships, their morality, etc. So Audrey set out to find that sweet spot.
(I am the beginning. Autocorrect, what if someone actually wills Dova to have their life be centric like I’m religion.)
