Woman turned away at a conference expecting to be let in with a 6 month old baby
I hate to say this, but most conferences now have childcare options including financial support. It’s fine until it’s a slippery slope when the point of the conference is lost. I’m sorry, but I do not want your kid running around screaming at a conference when we are trying to solve nuclear fusion. Please leave them at home or with the services the conference provides. Parents often assume everyone wants their children around because if the parents love them so much they of course everyone else will. This view is rather entitled. That their inconveniencing of everyone else is something they have a right to with no repercussions. Child free spaces need to be more prevalent for the people that want to get away from the noise and for parents to respect that and be fined otherwise.
Of course everyone rushed to her acting like the baby would be no trouble at all. Tell me if that’s true when there’s one hundred, one thousand. Why do we all need to act like someone’s baby is the most beautiful thing in the world and an angel. Some of them are quite ugly actually. When people do this I get some of them have genuine excitement and politeness baked in, but this creates a social norm that we all need to lie about how wonderful babies are when they make some people unbelievably uncomfortable. Because how dare you even say you like the quiet of conversing with adults in a place designated for work.
